Back in the late '70s, I was commissioned to create a series of painting for a new Mariotte Hotel. I
decided to do the
series of Women in White, so that I could play with colors within the white areas of the clothing.
I hired some models, and did weeks of photographic shoots. The results are many of the
Women in White in this
section, with the geese.
Well, that got me into a mind set, so I hired a model I had known
years ago, from
studying with Dan McCaw in his old studio, that was once owned by Don Putt Putman. Consuello and her
daughter met me at
the arboritum, northeast of L.A. California for an afternoon of "dress rehearsals!"...All of the
clothes were from my
collection, of old petticoats, etc...well, at the end of the day, I had about 15 rolls of film
reference to last me almost a life time!
I have never painted with BROWN as my main
"color"... cause I do not
basically think of brown as a color!!! HOWEVER, there was something about this composition, that
pushed my buttons, and
thus it became what I did not expect!
Also, I think my wanting to use a lot of the natural
linen to be a dominate
color in the painting, also highly influenced my choices! For about 60% of this painting is done
washes. About the only thing that is opague paint, is the lighter areas of the white cloth! And the
small amount of
intense sunlight, in the background.
In my career, I have always experimented, to find other
expression, and to keep my thought process fresh, and out of comfortable "traps"...
