A simple piece, but a favorite! When I first moved to North Idaho, I moved to an old ranch of over 200 acres, called The Selkirk Ranch. It no longer exists, as I knew it. But it does in many of my paintings! The fields and suggested forest in the background of this piece and many others, is in memory of those days.
And again, I was pushing what I could in this piece: yes, that is almost pure black (out of the tube black) that creates the woman's sash. Hardly an artist that is living today, has not heard instructors say that BLACK is an absolute NO on the palette. Well, if you KNOW how to use it...it's wonderful, And if you don't, it can destroy every color it touches!
I've also used black in flesh tones, the kind of tones that happen indoors, with no direct light on the skin, where it gets kind of ashen
(if there is such a word).
