Throughout almost all of the water lily series, there is one common design element that each shares...that is, a pattern based on a triangle...3 pods, 3 blooms, or perhaps the shape of the exposed water, or two pods and one bloom, or the shape of a group of leaves.

WAY BACK in the mid 70s, when I first was exhibiting in galleries, I ALWAYS RECEIVED THE SAME 2 COMMENTS FROM THE GALLERY OWNERS:
"If you would just tighten up, we could sell your work."
My comment to this was that I painted for myself, and that I did do a painting tight , once, and was bored out of my gourd! I felt if I just stayed true to myself, and kept working on improving, I would create quality buyers.
Back in those days, we didn't have "catch words" like "impressionism" or "plein air painting."

The other comment was:
"We can always tell the artists that come into our gallery...because they always like your work." One year, at the Death Valley Show, I was honored with receiving the Sid Burns's Artists' Artist Award.

LETTERS FROM PATRONS

February 22, 2005
Dear Betty Jean, I also wanted to say that your paintings are so delightful and filled with so much energy, everything seems to appear so fresh and moving, I just love all of them. Esther White
