Beneath the pond there lies a dome,
Where water nymphs have made their home,
For I have seen reflections there
Of lovely maids with flowing hair;
And when the lily pads all stir,
I wonder what may next occur,
So then I sit and wait for hours
To see a face among the flowers.
But, they never seem to roam
Far from the safety of their dome,
So I must question in frustration,
Was it but my imagination?
Were there but fishes swimming by
Midst cloud reflections from the sky?
When Gina saw this painting at a show, she told me that
she had written a poem about water lilies, and would send me a copy. The surprise was that she was looking at THIS painting (published in an article with SWA magazine) when she wrote it!
This painting and the others in this section were all created in my studio, unlike all of the paintings in Landscapes, which were painted on location, commonly known as "en plein air".
All of these paintings were the result of my photo research, which was taken at Balboa Park, in San Diego, California.
Of the nine trips there in recent years, there were lilies only three times in the reflecting pools. The last trip, it appeared that all the lilies had been permanently removed ! What a loss!
Now, to the lesson I set out to understand in creating this piece. This reproduction of the original does not do it justice. The blue is more "liquid", the colors glow more than seen here. The ENTIRE painting was "keyed", that is "set up" so that the light reflecting on the dome's marble surface, would reflect it's warm yellow color. The challenge, was that the dome itself was yellow. The secret was in applying a famous quote from the ages: "Painting is quite simple: Just put the right color and the right value in the right place!" Simple maybe, but not easy!!
