PLEIN AIR PAINTING
Behind a major mansion that I stayed at for a week, while in Kilarney, out back was this large pastoral area, perhaps a race track at one time, that consisted of a raised wall, wide enough to walk on, bound on one side with ancient beech trees, and on the other side, azaleas that were taller than two story houses!
This "wall - path" went around maybe a mile or so, coming back to it's beginning. After walking for perhaps an hour, in awe, I found myself back at the beginning, and this magnificent Beech tree! Wish I had a person included, to show it's massive size!
PLEIN AIR PAINTERS OF AMERICA (PAPA) was created by Denise Burns, but Billups set up the promotion for PAPA thru 22 full page ads a year from '87 thru '95 which created this AWESOME PLEIN AIR MOVEMENT thru out the USA, placing ads in about 5 major publications, including:
SOUTHWEST ART MAGAZINE,
ARTISTS OF THE ROCKIES,
ART OF THE WEST,
and a few times in Art Connoisseur Magazine.
As a result, PAPA went from a membership of less than 20 members, to a select membership of 35
nationally and internationally known artists, and for many whose names have received recognition thru their association with PAPA.
Also, thru out the USA, there are dozens, if not hundreds of "plein air organizations"...all due to the 6+ years
that Billups created national ads, for PAPA~~~
Letter from another artist:
Betty, your work is wonderful regardless of size. You have the "artist's eye", married with natural talent that you were blessed with at birth, excellent training, great skill, and mastery of the brush and paint. Each painting reflects these things. You cannot go wrong!! Your work is truly beautiful!! Kris Ellen Jenott
