with a minimum of 10 students, and not more than 16.

AND, if on the internet, will include one critiq on line for each student after the workshop!

I will paint from sunrise to sunset, and anyone is welcome to join me, prior and after the class schedule.

Each student is requested to bring to class the first day 1 or 2 samples of their work
so that I can understand the level that you are at, so I can best help you.

ALSO: bring 5 slides of work that best represents you...
we will have 2 nights of critiques for the art work...
so that each of you will have a deeper understanding of how to strengthen your finished work.

WORKSHOP PHILOSOPHY
Capturing an inner feeling, a moment in time so quickly passing...
a moment beyond words, almost beyond thought...
The nuances that dance between a mountain and the sky that embrace her,
creating a symphony that the eyes perceive but only the soul can remember.
It is this celebration of light upon the physical and the ethereal
that creates a love affair, not only between these, but also the viewer.

If this is what you would like to begin to learn how to do in your paintings,
then Billups is the teacher you have been looking for! Regardless of what or how one expresses themselves in 2 dimensional art

oil ... watercolor ... pastel ... acrylic
expressionistic ... impressionistic ... abstract ... graphic ... Photo-realism

Billups will work with each student in their own style.

There are Universal Art Principles that if applied, and if understood, only strengthen the artistic expression of one`s choosing.
One of the BEST ways she knows how to teach (and thus learn) COLOR and LIGHT (which are her passions), is to study it in the manner she did...
BY DOING MANY COLOR SPOTS, VS DOING LONG, "FINISHED" PAINTINGS

Usually the first day will be spent indoors, working on basic value and color challenges. I believe that the biggest problem we all have is finding the right value for what we are observing, and attempting to capture. Second to that, is color. Knowing how to make a dark color (red) appear light, without cooling it with white, and other color challenges, is something to work on in a more controled environment, than outside.

Where some instructors only deal with 2 or 3 things in a workshop, I find it difficult to ignore the other imortant elements of painting: value and color, yes....but also design, composition, edges, artist statement and feelings, etc. will all be covered individually.

LETTERS FROM PREVIOUS STUDENTS

Perhaps the most fundamentally important skill that anyone interested in painting can acquire is the ability to truly and creatively SEE. It is this skill which Betty Billups helps all of us to develop. She has a unique talent to communicate how to see colors and break them down into components which we can reproduce; how to see light and how to express that light in our chosen color values; and how to accurately reproduce the shapes we see by using positive and negative space. She doesn`t teach us how to paint in her style, but gives us the basics so that we can apply our own style and creativity in the most effective way. taking Betty's class is, if you will forgive the pun, an "eye-opening" experience.
Gretchen Albrecht-Hellar

Betty`s information has been extremely valuable to me. As a teacher she explains methods and techniques that have improved my over all painting skills. I learn the most by her demonstrations and her helpful input with my paintings. I recommend her teach for anyone wanting to learn more about color, values and composition.
Terry Lee, Wild Life artist

I have nothing but praise for Betty`s ability to teach art. Her knowledge of all phases of art is remarkable and her willingness to share this knowledge one of her fine features. She has a special sense of color, design, composition and values, and her individual attention to a student is a trait not always found in an art instructor. A feature I admire in her teaching is that she encourages and guides each one to paint and develop their own style.
Dorothy Smith

Attending a workshop conducted by Betty is like talking to your best friend--nothing is held back. You completely enter Betty`s personal creative thought process. As a student you learn to really "see" ...and acquire knowledge through crystal-clear analogies and phrasing. The student is not only brought a greater understanding of the basics, but also shares in Betty`s continuing search for artistic development. Working with her is a valuable experience for an artist at any level.
Laura Collins

I received as much knowledge setting in on your demo on Wednesday, as I did from all the other instructors during the week. Thank you!
Student, PAPA Workshop, Bennington VT 1999

Betty`s workshop expanded my thinking about how to paint. I acquired a new perspective on value, color, and technique. I was forced out of my comfortable style and incorporated some freshness, newness into my work. It will take me to the next step in my art.
Laurel Egan, Butte Montana

Having attended several workshops with other well known artists, I feel the knowledge Betty Billups so generously shared with her students is the most in depth, I have ever experienced. Her knowledge of the way colors dance and sparkle was priceless for me as I continue in my career to bring to my work the "life" and "sparkle" that she has successfully captured and is willing to share with her students. Her sense of humor and love of life brings a warmth to her classes that makes one feel so comfortable and welcome, the perfect situation for learning new things.
Elaine Locati, Helena MT

Betty Billups has an incredible amount of energy for her art and her work. She is constantly thinking like an artist and she challenges her students to do the same.
Jeanette Barnes, Butte, MT

" For the experienced artist in need of a tune-up Betty Billups is the artist to turn to. She will get you thinking about all those things you should be thinking about like composition , value, color, shape , negative and positive, etc.. but have put aside in favor of your "safe space". She gives a real workout and I came away from her workshop with renewed excitment for painting."
Toni Seccomb, Butte MT

"Betty goes far beyond the role of instructor. She works tirelessly with the group as well as the individual. She is committed to painting as well as teaching. Her commitment is that of achieving the best possible painting: color, composition, mood, and atmosphere. I learned a great deal that I had never heard from any other instructors, and I have had a great many of them!"
Sallie Bowen

I had a wonderful time painting with you and enjoyed your teaching style and one-on-one critiques. You gave me some very timely advice about "same value, different color" and each time you walked away from my work you left me with just one thing to think about, not twenty! I am inspired again....hope we meet again soon.
Linda Compton, Helena, MT

I was truly energized by the workshop I took from Betty Billups last fall. While the workshop was only two days I felt like I experienced more in two days than I had in other 5 day workshops. I want more! Betty has a way of translating her experience in a patient, thoughtful and encouraging way. She loves sharing her art and it is obvious.
Terry Gonzales, he lives in Sandpoint Idaho & Ajo, Arizona

I liken (Betty) to the colors of the rainbow in her full spectrum knowledge of color, value, shapes, edges and use of compliments including applications of oil in any kind of light...even no light. She has such an ability to teach in any media the "old rules" of basic design in a renewed and "passionate" yet structured way. One could spend a lifetime trying to capture all the "jewels" of knowledge that she has and want to give.
Through (Betty's) eyes and her varied plein air experiences and subject matter, she can transform a very complex vision into a simple, direct, bold and HONEST statement. I valued her knowledge and the soul she puts into her pieces. When I first saw Billups' s work and I "jumped" at the first sign of a workshop....even when still rehabilatating from a difficult journey.....
Seeing Betty "apply" the paint with a brush in the many varied strokes opened my eyes and gave me back my vision to become an oil painter. She teachs with "passion" and applys it with "soul" because she has integrated her structure through thousands of heartfelt pieces with her visions.
Once again, Betty, like the rainbow, has so much to offer, you must catch it while its there and happening...
