Then the sun came out! Not only making me be creative with this piece, but now I had to turn my pochade box into the sun, with my back to this scene...forcing me to look over my shoulder for the balance of the painting! Physically, I thought I was going to die. Even more challenging, was the constantly moving waves! Never breaking the same...shapes, colors, values, edges, endings and beginnings, each to themselves, and then to the shape or wave next to it. May look simple...but far from it!
A professional is someone
who makes something that is very difficult, look very easy.
between 1986 and 1995, during the annual
Plein Air Painters of America Show.
In 1986, Denise approached Billups while at a show in Scottsdale Arizona, asking her to join a group she was putting together. Denise wanted one ad to be created, and asked Billups to do it. Billups, having studied commercial art, knew that ONE ad, would never make so much as a ripple, and suggested that a national advertising campaign be set up. From 1987 thru 1995, being the only ad chairman PAPA ever had, Billups placed full page monthly ads in magazines such as Southwest Art, Art West, Artists of the Rockies, etc. Today, along with 1000s of artists painting "en plein aire"...there is even one of two monthly national publications that promote solely, Plein Air Painting!
Today the membership includes such artists as Ken Auster, Christopher Blossom, Bye Bitney, Scott Burdick, Gil Dellinger, Gay Faulkenberry, Joseph Paquet, Ray Roberts, Matt Smith, and Skip Whitcomb, to name a few.
The rest is history.
